12 Trips in 12 Months — 2018 Edition

It’s hard to believe but 2018 will be my 4th year in a row striving for 12 trips in 12 months! When I first started this initiative in 2015, I thought it was a lofty goal that I might not achieve. It felt attainable but something I would have to work for. I did work towards it (and learned a few lessons along the way) but in the end, I did achieve my initial goal in 2015!

Fast forward to today and I feel a lingering sense of anxiety about the fact that I only have 9 trips on the books for 2018 right now. I think the anxiety stems from feeling “cooped up”, but that feeling is perhaps even more crazy than the initial goal I set for myself. 9 trips in a year would be considered a significant amount of traveling by a vast majority of people, so the fact that I am feeling worried about not having enough travel is telling of how important travel has become to my lifestyle.

When I started this initiative, I never expected it to lead to a four year long journey full of destinations both domestic and abroad. Striving for 12 trips in 12 months has solidified that traveling is an integral part of my personal mission and identity. Over the last 3 years, I have accepted that travel is something necessary for me. It brings me joy; it calms me; it energizes me.

Right now, this is what my schedule for 2018 is looking like:

  1. January – Helsinki, Finland
  2. January – Dallas, Texas
  3. February – San Diego, California
  4. March – Savannah, Georgia
  5. March – Breckenridge, Colorado
  6. April – Naples, Florida
  7. May – Canadian Road Trip
  8. June – Cleveland, Ohio
  9. August – Japan
  10. November – Denver, Colorado

Based on how previous years have gone, I have a feeling this schedule will gradually fill up over the year with random long weekends around the US, travel opportunities I can’t yet foresee and last-minute trips to see friends and family. That is part of the thrill of this campaign though — I leave myself open to say YES to travel opportunities that arise.

I feel confident that I will reach my goal again this year because for 2018, I am making it a goal to spend more time and energy on my blog. I hope that by investing in my passion, I can turn it into something bigger that includes sponsored press trips, freelance opportunities and other “blogger” related perks. Ultimately, I strive for a location-independent lifestyle and I hope to achieve that through my brand but also from freelance writing. I have a good feeling about 2018 :)

  1. Great variety of places you have planned for the year! Do you have all these trips booked in, or do you tend to keep it a bit more flexible to see what else might pop up?

    1. It really depends on the trip! A lot of them are already booked, but some are still in the “idea” phase. I typically book/confirm things about 2 months ahead of time, unless there is an obligation, like a family wedding, since I know it won’t change and can book far ahead of time. That usually leaves some room for flexibility if things come up last minute!
