Sri Lanka may seem an obscure or random travel destination. Most people couldn’t pick it out on a map, let alone know what to do there. But recently, it has been all the hype in the travel blogosphere and an upsurge in tourism is making the island the new “it” destination in Asia.
In this past year, BBC Travel, the New York Times, Adventurous Kate and Travel + Leisure Magazine have all featured Sri Lanka in their travel editorials. It’s a hit! But what makes it such a great spot to travel? From adventure outdoor activities to luxurious beach resorts to cultural heritage sights, Sri Lanka has a little bit of everything to offer. Plus with a compact island environment, it’s easy to explore different parts of the island on a tight time-frame.
It’s an ideal place for budget travelers. Tuk-tuks, bicycles and intercity trains make it easy and cheap to get around. Plus, many of the heritage sites are free to enter and explore. Backpackers will find a myriad of cheap lodging options including hostels and beach front hotels.
At the same time, you can spend a little bit more money and customize a trip doing all kinds of prcier activities. A popular option is elephant & jungle safaris. With several different national parks to choose from, you can get up close and personal with the animals in one of the most densely populated bio-diversity centers in the world.
Finally, the Sri Lankan people are welcoming and hassle-free. Unlike its neighbor to the north, Sri Lanka has a reputation for genuineness. People are helpful without being over-bearing or obtrusive, and you don’t get ripped off at every turn. You can ask people for help at the train station even if you don’t speak the language and you can almost always find someone to guide you along the way.
For all these reasons (and many more!), Sri Lanka has recently been featured as a popular up-and-coming destination in Asia. Tourism starting to boom! If you travel now, you’ll be ahead of the trend and can see the still untouched regions of this beautiful island. While this is great for the economy on the island, it can be destructive to local culture and biodiversity. Greenheart Travel is proud to offer a new program in this delightful destination that will help preserve the natural biodiversity of this island as it deals with the influx of new visitors.
