Sunsets in Santorini

Being up 1000 feet above sea level on a steep mountain over looking the ocean, it’s no surprise that sunsets in Santorini are renowned. Countless restaurants in Fira & Oia claim to offer the best sunset viewing. Every ocean side restaurant has a patio precariously hanging over the steep cliff, and many of the hotels offer their guests private views.

I would recommend making a reservation for a restaurant if you want to get a good sunset view, since the public/open areas fill up about an hour ahead of time. This week is when we transition passengers on the boat, and the week one people are getting off and the week two people are getting on. So we were all in Santorini at the same time!

A big group of 16, we made quite an entrance at the restaurant. But Nassoua was more than accomdating to our group and the views were, not surprisingly, breathtaking. We all took turns snapping pics onthe balcony as the sun began dropping behind the island across from us. The orange hues front the sun light up the city in a beautiful glow, making for a lovely cocktail and dinner ambiance.

Dinner also proved to be a delight, with a mix of Greek and local specialties, as well as western European favorites. We shared a variety of Greek appetizers including grape leaf wrapped lamb, saganaki, grilled octopus and spanakopita. These were some top-notch appetizers, especially the saganaki and octopus, both of which were clearly local and very fresh. For my entree, I ordered a lamb and vegetable dish in lemon sauce. The lamb was the most tender I have ever eaten, and that is no exaggeration. It fell of the bone and melted in my mouth. And the fat was perfectly rendered to have that buttery texture.

My other favorite (which I conviniently took a few nibbles off of), was the dish Sam ordered, the beef stifado. You may remember this dish from a few days ago, because I raved about it then. This one was about a thousand times better! Cooked in a tomato and clove (and probably a few other things) sauce with onions, the beef has clearly been braising for the entire day. So tender and rich in flavor, me and Sam were fighting over the last few bites of this tasty dish.

For dinner, I’m wearing a white eyelet dress by Catherine Malandrino. It is so perfect for this climate and I feel like I match all the white-washed homes! I mistaken wanted to look dressy and wore my Steven wedges. With the hills and cobblestone streets, I won’t be making that mistake again. I’m also sporting some gold jewelry by Gorjana.
