Sunrise in a Hot Air Balloon

Another highlight of the trip was our sunrise hot air balloon ride over the Maasai Mara. We woke up at around 4am to make it to the balloon. I had no idea how big they were! The basket alone on our balloon could hold 20 people! We crammed into the basket and the balloon began to fill up. The fire is lit by the driver and rises to inflate the balloon. It is really loud when he lights it, and that is how you can change the height and direction of the balloon. We took off right as the sun was rising and got to see a gorgeous sunrise over the savanna.

From the balloon, we got a really good view of the wildebeast migration as well as the curving Mara River. The banks of the river was packed with crocs and hippos, and we even got to see a zebra river crossing. We stayed in the balloon for about 1.5 hours and I got lots of great photos!!

We landed in the savanna, which was one of the funnest parts. You get moving pretty fast in the balloon, and so when we descended, we sorted of bounced off the ground and the tipped over. Once we climbed out basket, we were greeted by a delicious breakfast in the grassland surrounding by antelopes and wildebeasts. Quite a way to start a day on safari. IMG_3085
